    What Is a System Boiler?

A system boiler is a type of boiler that stores hot water in a storage tank or cylinder, unlike a combi boiler, which supplies the heating and hot water for a home from one unit.

How Does a System Boiler Work?

A system boiler works by burning gas which is used to create hot water, this water is then fed into a water cylinder which allows for quick access to hot water, the size of the cylinder determines how long it can be in use before the hot water is depleted.

Unlike a heat only boiler, a system boiler takes water directly from the mains, meaning there is no need for an additional cold water cylinder in the loft.

What Are the Benefits of a System Boiler?

System boilers have a number of benefits, particularly for those with high hot water usage:

    • Allows you to use multiple hot water sources simultaneously.
    • No need for an additional cold water tank.
    • Provides hot water on demand provided the tank has not been emptied by previous usage.
    • Economical to run.
    • Easy to install.

    Other Types of Gas Boiler

At Gas Safe, we have experience in installing, repairing and servicing all types of gas boiler:

    Combi Boiler

Combi (combination) boilers are the most popular type of boiler, being a compact unit that provides both the heating and hot water on demand without the need for an external cylinder.

    Benefits:

    • High efficiency unit
    • Compact size
    • Provides hot water on demand
    • Cheaper than a conventional boiler

    Conventional Boiler

Conventional boilers, sometimes referred to as heat only boilers are ideal in homes where a traditional heating system is already in place. Despite less being installed, they are still very reliable.

    Benefits:

    • Can use multiple hot taps at once
    • A good option for low water pressure
    • System boilers are also a good option for older properties as minimal changes to existing pipework are required
